The New Space pt.2 / Hidden Shower + Early Construction

Monday = tired. Daylight savings and my body didn’t agree at 6am this morning. (7am thanks to daylight savings…) Today I bring you more news in regards to our loft/warehouse conversion. This time we have a quick video tour and I’ll tell you a little about “Kobe” our mysterious and unlicensed contractor, whom is clearly using illegal workers. But hey, its all to save a buck right?

So about two weeks ago I had to meet the Marshal on site, so he could adorn our front door with a neat “landlord has taken possession of the crap inside this place” piece of official paper. I tried to ask the Marshal some specific questions, but all he told me was that it all had to legally stay on premise for the next 30 days. Another month, guh. He added that we could move it, we just couldn’t throw it away or destroy it. Meaning my bandanna with baseball cap bonfire has to wait. Other then that, he was clearly un-interested in talking and left abruptly.

I called around for a locksmith, would you know that a lot of locksmiths in brooklyn are just various fronts for a 1800 lock smith service? Tricky bastards. It took a bit but I found a guy and he replaced the front locks for me. I couldn’t resist… so i asked him if he knew of any good contractors on the cheap. His eye twinkled and he replied “Of course. One of my very good friends does contracting. He is great.” He paused just before adding. “But he is unlicensed…”

Everything with this guy “Kobi” has been a strange struggle. Clearly he speaks english but even that i begin to wonder. After Lauren, Enjie and myself spent a few hours on a saturday moving 50′x15′ sq feet of crap stacked to the ceiling to another end of the place, Kobe came by to give us an estimate.Mind you, here were some of our previous quotes :

“16,000″
“9,750″
“1,600″ - (this guy didn’t show up and never called back. hm i wonder…)
“4,000″ - Kobi.

Kobi always responds to phone calls and to be honest, has done quite a fine job. However, he also called me several times saying he needed more money at odd intervals during the project. I kept telling him “no”. We stick to what we agreed to… that and he shifted meeting dates around constantly… I’ll be at the place later today to inspect the handi-work, make sure the lights and outlets work and give him his final payment. Oh yes, cash only here of course.Over the weekend we went to home depot and a tile place. The trek was long and terrible. As we have no car and home depot is an unholy rip off. Charging nearly twice as much for paint. Glad we were to lazy to actually buy it from them. Here are some pics of the place from my iphone:

I can’t wait for Geekfest ‘08 in this place. If you guys get that mountain of crap out of there by the summer, we should rent a bouncey castle. An inflatable pool, too - for pudding wrestling.

You know… its funny. I was looking at bouncy castles online just last week. I certainly wouldn’t mind throwing a show or two either.
